Volkswagen reported a third-quarter operating loss of €5.9 billion on October 29, Reuters reported. The automaker said special items of about €8 billion, largely associated with a writedown on its Porsche investment, weighed on the result.

The group is also managing intense competition in China, tariff costs and the expense of its electric-vehicle transition. An operating loss is different from an after-tax net loss, and the effect of one-time charges should be distinguished from the underlying business performance.
