Environmental and Indigenous groups welcomed Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s reelection in Brazil, AP reported on October 27. Lula defeated Flávio Bolsonaro in the October 25 runoff with 51.78% of the vote, according to the report.

Supporters saw the result as an opening to continue efforts against illegal Amazon deforestation. They also warned that opposition in Congress could constrain those efforts. An election result does not itself establish future environmental outcomes.
